News Alert: Flooding in the ASU Biocollections
Last Thursday-Friday night, November 16-15th 2024 a large part of the ASU Biocollections were inundated when a water mains on Alameda Avenue broke. Fortunately, the water entering the building was noticed around midnight by the cleaning crew and the City of Tempe sent out a team to repair the broken pipe in the street. Unfortunately, however, significant areas in the Mollusk, Invertebrate, and Vertebrate Collections were flooded. Also a small part of the Vascular Plant herbarium and several offices were affected.
We since manage to remove all the water and a remediation team is now reviewing the damage. Fortunately, all specimens are safe, but the Collections will have to deal with drywall repairs for months. To safeguard specimens, several cabinets will be moved into temporary storage until repairs have finished.
Flood insurance will cover most of the damage, and we hope that any of the archival curation materials will be replaced as part of the remediation procedure.
But we do much appreciate anyone's support. Please check out the how you can support us through the ASU Foundation.
Thanks for considering !!!
The ASU Biocollections Team.
