Art Under the Microscope - 2026

Since 2022, Art Under the Microscope has been an annual collaboration between the ASU Biocollections and the ASU School of Art, bringing together science and creativity through hands-on exploration of the natural world.

From June 29 through July 2, 2026, the ASU Biocollections welcomed high school students for a four-day workshop of discovery and artistic expression. Throughout the week, students explored a different section of the collections each day, developing their artistic skills across a variety of media while drawing inspiration from the remarkable diversity of specimens preserved in the collections.

The workshop began with the Mammalogy and Fluid Collections, where students studied the unique anatomy and forms of a variety of animals. Through drawing and painting, they closely observed their favorite specimens while learning how structure relates to function in the natural world.

The second day featured the Insect Collections, showcasing an extraordinary diversity of pinned insects alongside microscopic details only visible under magnification. Students studied intricate patterns on smaller insects through microscopes, and sculpted clay models of larger species, learning how specialized body parts contribute to each insect’s enduring resilience to thrive in their habitat.

On the third day, the students transitioned into the Fossil Collection where they examined fossils representing different eras, shapes, and sizes. These ancient specimens challenged students to imagine ancient worlds where these organisms once flourished.

The workshop concluded with the Mollusk Collection, where students explored the beauty and diversity of shells. Microscopes revealed delicate internal structures, intricate patterns, and fine textures, while larger shells inspired them with their elegant spirals, striking spines, and vibrant colors. Students translated these observations into their artwork, carefully recreating textures with watercolor, mixing colors to capture the perfect shade, and even creating worlds where these shells come to life.

Throughout the week, these students strengthened both their creativity and artistic skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the biodiversity our world has to offer, from aquatic to terrestrial environments, and from ancient life to modern ecosystems. By the end of the workshop, they fully captured the beauty of scientific collections, blending curiosity, creativity, and a newfound connection to the natural world. The ASU Biocollections was gratified to host these talented young artists and looks forward to inspiring future generations in the pursuit to connect science, art, and creativity.

Now in its fourth year, Art Under the Microscope continues to demonstrate the power of connecting science and art.
